Proprietary Code
- Don't use page transition effects.
- Like colored scrollbars, the effect can only be seen by Internet Explorer users... and only when the browser is in quirks (bugs) mode. It can, however, cause unexpected problems in old versions of Netscape—even though it doesn't show up. Like
tablebased layouts, the entire page has to load before the transition can begin. It won't work smoothly until pages have been cached. If you really want to use this, a linked external style sheet can help. Pages will load quicker once the style sheet is cached. - Don't tamper with the browser scrollbars.
- The scrollbar is part of the user interface which should not be altered. If your page includes a valid
DTD(and it would have to, to be valid HTML), it won't show up anyway. This is a proprietary Microsoft thing that only works in IE5+. Other browsers ignore it. - Don't use
blinkormarquee. - The former is supported only in Netscape, the latter, only in Internet Explorer. Too much movement on a Web page is distracting and I think, most folks would agree, annoying. It can trigger migraine headaches and seizures in some people.
- Don't use IE CSS filters
- Glow, Dropshadow, Flip, Blur, Wave, Alpha Channel etc. only work in Internet Explorer. They can, however, cause problems (like overlapping text) in other browsers. At best, the effect will not show up. If the project demands something fancy here, use an optimized graphic. If not, valid styled text is always the best choice.
